Bathroom & Exhaust Ventilation

Bathroom & Exhaust Ventilation:

Your bathroom fan is likely the LAST thing you think about until it makes a noise, and even then, it usually needs to be pretty bad before you’re going to go and do anything about it.  Exhaust fans are usually required in all Ontario homes with any bathroom or powder room, that do not have a window, but still a good idea as you don’t want to leave a window open at -40°C.

Rooms with pools & hot tubs also require good ventilation from chlorine & other chemicals diffusing to the rest of your home – that one should be a no-brainer. Exhaust fans are also typically required in kitchens where there are any cooktop cooking appliances, with the exclusion of microwaves. (check building code in your area)

The purpose of a bathroom exhaust fan, outside of obvious odour elimination, is to remove moisture from the bathroom, where standing water such as in a toilet or sink can contribute to mold & mildew, which can cause all kinds of health problems. In rooms with showers and baths, the fans work to also remove moisture that accumulates on tiles, mirrors, floors & ceilings as well. A fan needs to have the appropriate fan capacity for the size of room. They are mainly installed the ceiling, but in some situations can be installed in a wall.

Proper ventilation may also be a good idea in areas such as: laundry rooms, garages, workshops, basements, and exercise rooms, depending on the amount of time you’re going to be spending in there and for what purpose. For example, if you have a 3D printer and are printing with ABS in your home (even in a closed-off room), you will still need an exhaust fan (as opposed to PLA which does not necessarily). If you’re going to do a lot of experimenting with different types of materials, make sure to protect your home and family with a vented enclosure for your 3D printer. As 3D printing is so new and not yet mainstream, building codes may not have yet caught up with the industry, but rest assured they will eventually catch up.

Not just due to dust floating in the air, but workshops should also have a good ventilation system to give glue smells, paint, varnish, wood particles and other toxic fumes a chance to escape.

When it comes to bathroom fans there are actually many different types & styles:

  1. Regular exhaust fans – eliminate odour, humidity and other pollutants

  2. Bluetooth fans – light & music mode capabilities controlled through a smartphone

  3. Fans with lights – fan and convenient light in the same source – controlled individually

  4. Fans with timers – a long time favourite to remove moisture beyond the time you are in the shower – some operate on low mode to continually remove moisture from the bathroom

  5. Fans with heaters – an obvious great choice to help dry off quicker and heat up the room

  6. Humidity and motion sensing fans – a great choice for hands free smart technology that you don’t need to ever worry about – it works without any input

  7. Decorative fans – fan & light combos that blend in or compliment the room and often offer perimeter ambient light

  8. Commercial & High Capacity Fans – these fans are great for large rooms in lofts, luxury homes & offices – they are super quiet while moving a lot of air

If you enjoy spending time in a steam shower, hot bath or Jacuzzi, you’ll know that quiet time is important to you and mood means everything. Choosing the right bathroom fan with quiet ambient lighting options and music can make that mini getaway all you need at the end of a hard day. From time to time as these fans are frequently drawing dust & debris through them, they become clogged with hair, pet dander, dust and mold and require cleaning.
